However, (you did see that But... coming, didn't you?) The current economy means our family needs a fall back position. During those 10 years as an at home, work at home, stay at home mom times, my husband continued work in the Engineering field. A field that is particularly shaky in these tough times. So off I go to see what is out there.
What am I qualified to do? Not engineering, not without further education. The field has sped up and passed me by in the last decade. Anyways, the time commitment means no one would be around for our kids and perpetual daycare is not the life I envision for my children. Most retail/entry level jobs would be minimum wage and I can't stomach the idea of flipping burgers or even corralling teens flipping burgers. I can teach, but only at the Community College/College level which is still not conducive to the kids' school schedules.
So it appears I'm at a cross-roads. I am putting feelers out to various Universities and collecting information about the MAT (Master of Arts Teaching) degrees. After 6 years of college and 2 degrees, I'll have to put on my thinking cap and earn another degree. Once certified (and poorer thanks to high tuition prices) I should be able to teach Math or Chemistry at a secondary level. Or at least substitute teach. Time to crack open the text books. I hope to start in January of 2010, which gives me time to take the tests, find funding, hope our President gives grants for educating teachers in Math and Science. (Hey, he states this in many of his speeches, I hope he follows through!)

Ok, done with the boring stuff. Now for some crafty/fibery content. I finished my first One Row Handspun scarf. The batt I used is a lovely blend, won at the Black Sheep Gathering Ravelry Bingo. A unique batt from It's A Colorful Life. 3.3 ounces of Merino, Bamboo, Tussah Silk, and Angora. Yumm.

Nutmeg was the only cat who didn't move when I asked for a model. And yes, that is SNOW in the background. Sigh, I hope it doesn't pile up too much this time.

Well, here is hoping you find something flexible so you can still be home for the kids *hugs* and LOL abotu nutmeg... so sweet ;)
Good luck with the job hunting. I know my county in TN recently passed a plan that includes extra help for anyone getting math/science teaching degrees, so maybe your area will do that too!
you may find this a silly proposition, but if you've cared for your terminally ill parents and raised children, you sound like a caring individual who could be a nurse.
nursing is not has hard or as lucrative as engineering, but you could enter a nursing program and in 2 years have your RN and make $25-30 an hour, starting, and you will ALWAYS be guaranteed a job. No matter how shaky the economy.
I am currently in year 2 of my community college RN degree. It s a B*tch, but its going to be worth it. Helping people AND making a decent paycheck is what many people only wish they could do.
Good luck in whatever you choose!
Nice scarf and good luck with the job hunting/education furthering!t
