I remembered a trick from my brief machine knitting days. Waste yarn.
To make a toe up sock with your choice of a toe, here is one method.
Taking waste yarn of the same or similar weight, cast on the number of instep stitches for your toe up sock of choice. Knit 4 or 5 rows. Switch to the yarn for your sock. Knit the length of your sock (minus the toe length), do a heel and the leg. Bind off.

Now you have a sock without a toe and waste yarn on the toe end.
Using your needles, pick up the back loops of the sock yarn next to the waste yarn. In this example, the waste yarn is pink, the picked up stitches are rainbow colored.

Once all the stitches are on the needle, unravel the waste yarn.

Attach your working yarn and knit your top down toe of choice.

That is a great idea! Thanks.
What is the yarn in that sock? It's very pretty.
Great idea, Michele! I hate toe up socks too. I just usually avoid them, but that's a great idea. I'm smacking my forehead wondering why I didn't think of it.
Ok, that's just freakin' brilliant! Really great idea!
That's definitely a great idea! I'm not a big fan of the provisional cast on (short rows are fine), but I figure I have something that I don't like so much on the toe either way...provisional cast on or kitchener stitch! =)
That's a very interesting idea. I'm going to have to try that. :D

P.S. Where did you get the cute martial arts belt icons in your sidebar? I'd like to put my belt rank on my page, too!
Wow, amazing idea! Ditto the freakin' brilliance comment.
